Many people ask, “when are you getting another dog.” For a while, we said we didn’t know. We needed to settle into our new home and learn about our new town. We needed some time.

In September, as we got our license plates, John asked, “are you getting WHEATEN plates again?” I took it as a sign a puppy was in our future. WHEATEN and WHEATIE were taken. One day WHEAT10 popped into my head. Yes, my car has new plates with WHEAT10! One small step.

We knew that Hobbes wanted us to get another dog. One night as I fell asleep, Hobbes said, “Get another dog.” I’m very fortunate I can hear his messages.

I told John about Hobbes’ message. John said, “I doubt we’ll see a Wheaten terrier in Arizona.” I let it go.

Two days later, we went to Prescott’s Courthouse Plaza for an art show. Prescott is a very dog friendly town. We saw several dogs and said hello to a few of them. Then about 100 feet in front of us, I saw and dog and asked, “is this a Wheaten?” The woman said yes and told us how she found her dog. She got it at a pet store. I exhaled and immediately thought “I can’t support a puppy mill.” The thought passed.

The next day a neighbor told us there was a Wheaten just a few houses from us. We met the dog and found out she’s a Woodoodle — a Wheaten-Poodle blend. Interesting.

In two days, we got signs about Wheatens! I decided to do some research.

On the AKC Marketplace, I found several Wheatens for sale. One person had two 9-month old male Wheatens. She said she will send me photos. I never heard from her again.

I continued my search. In emails to breeders, I dropped Hobbes’ breeder name. I contacted breeders I knew in Minnesota. All said they weren’t having puppies for a while. Not time for a new dog.

Then I reached out to one breeder whose dogs have the “American coat” like our first 2 Wheatens. She sent me to an “Irish coat” breeder. Again no future plans for puppies.

I reached out the “American coat” breeder again and asked questions. We ended our long conversation with her saying, “I’ll find you a puppy!”

A few weeks later she emails that her friend was planning on puppies and the father (stud) has a coat like Hobbes. Some of the puppies would have the beautiful Irish coat. So now we wait.

At first, I was amazed about the first Arizona Wheatens we met. Now I’m just letting the synchronicities happen. I know we’ll get another Wheaten with a curly, soft coat. We will find the perfect puppy – I’m sure Hobbes is working on it.

John is taking another step in preparing the house for a dog. Our master bath has a huge walk-in shower. We want to change the shower head and John figured out how to add a “dog hand-held shower” for our future dog.

We’ve always been one dog at a time household. Now we’re now waiting for our fourth Wheaten. Many clients have several dogs or cats, because they love lots of furry companions or they could never be without a pet. I understand.

Besides the human family, do you wonder what your fur babies think about getting a new pet? The ones I’ve talked to usually say “yes!” and sometimes say “no.”

Are you feeling guilty about “replacing a beloved dog or cat?” I felt that way too after our first dog passed away. Since I started talking to animals, I’ve never had a deceased cat or dog say “no more pets.” Usually they want to help and bring a new pet to you. I know Hobbes is helping us find our puppy. Soon it will be time for a new dog.
