Recently Gizmo recovered from his neuter surgery. His recovery reminded me of many tips and resources for your dog and cat.
Surgery Recovery Tips
These tips for your dog will help both of you with the recovery process:
- When you pick up your dog after surgery, if possible, have someone sit in the back seat with your dog. This calms you and your dog.
- Be sure the cone (the “party hat” instead of “cone of shame”) is attached to her collar to lift the weight of it off her neck.
- If appropriate, try the soft collars that inflate.
- Gizmo enjoyed eating ice cubes from the floor instead of negotiating the water dish.
- If your dog jumps on your bed to sleep, consider putting your mattress on the floor during the no jumping restriction.
Great Way to Feed Your Dog and Cat
Before Gizmo had his surgery, I introduced him to StarMark Bob-A-Lot™. I filled it with some kibble and Gizmo learned how to get the food to fall out.
It’s a great way to feed a puppy! It’s mentally stimulating, takes time to eat, and tires a puppy!
The great news is it comes in a smaller size for puppies, small dogs, and cats. Gizmo’s is the large size and used daily.
Your pet will thank you and you’ll enjoy the entertainment. Here’s three cats learning to play with the Bob-A-Lot!
Pet Poison Helpline — Can save your pets life
This is the most important tip and resource for your dog and cat!
Right now, put the Pet Poison Helpline in your phone! 1-855-764-7661 and website. Phones are answered 24 hours 7 days a week. The $65 incident fee per incident includes follow-up consultations.
They help all types of dogs, cats, birds, and other animals in the United States, Canada, and Caribbean!
Last year I came home and found Gizmo chewed several Jade Plant leaves and left them on the rug.
Immediately I called the Helpline, and they gave me the information on what to do. Fortunately, he was okay.
Over the years, several friends’ dogs eat chocolate! They called the Helpline and got specific instructions according to the type of chocolate, amount eaten, and size of dog. They also had follow-up calls. Great news -– the dogs were fine! Pet parents are calmer too!
Please put it in your phone now!
What Dog Food is Best?
Wonder about dog food recalls? (Another important tip and resource for your dog and cat!)
Dog Food Advisor is known for its dog and cat food recalls emails. I recommend you sign up for the recall emails. You receive an email only when there is a food recall.
What you feed your pet is such a personal choice. Dog Food Advisor (link) helps cut through the information with updated dog food reviews. It reviews:
- Puppy food: dry, wet, large breed, and small breed.
- Dog food: dry, wet, raw, senior, grain free, with grain, sensitive stomach. Also by size – small dog, large breed adult, 12 popular breeds.
- Special requirements: budget friendly, allergies, weight loss, organic, and low fat.
I researched and decided what was the best food for Gizmo as a puppy and adult. Now I change his proteins often within the same dog food. An easy way to give him variety.
I watched the video how to check his ideal body weight by visual and hand. I also used the dog food calculator for how much food Gizmo needs per day with his specific food.
