Pet Hot Weather Tips

[Updated 6/18/2022]

Yikes, it’s hot everywhere. Looking for great pet hot weather tips? I have plenty for you!

Here’s what I learned over the years. Whether you have humidity or dry heat, it’s still hard on our pets. These are my favorite pet hot weather tips.

Walk early in the morning and late in the evening for cooler temperatures.

If the temperature is hot, here’s some special pet hot weather tips:

  • Wet your dog down. We keep a plastic pitcher of water outside in the shade and poured water over the dog’s back before a walk.
  • Beware! If your hose is sitting in the sun, the water is extremely hot and can burn your dog.
  • For short haired dogs, tie a wet bandana around her neck. You can freeze it first.
  • My favorite dog cooler is GF Pet® Ice Vest®. You wet the microfiber vest and put it on them. When Gizmo wears his vest, he walks in very hot temperatures without diving for shade. (Note: This link is the company link in Canada. Be sure to check measurements. Gizmo is an XL. Available at Amazon, Chewy, and other stores.)

  • In extreme heat, pavements get extremely hot. To test the pavement, I put on hand on the pavement. It’s too hot if it’s only a few seconds. PAWZ latex booties protect the paws. They are latex. If you live in the extreme heat like Phoenix, I don’t recommend these booties in extreme temps. I understand they may melt.
  • Musher’s Secret protects the paws with a wax. I hear it works well in the heat.
  • No air conditioning? Check out cooling mats for cats and dogs.
  • Carry water water in a workout squeeze bottle and let your dog drink from the stream of water. Water is important for all of you!
  • Short haired dogs and hairless breeds can sunburn. Use a pet safe sunscreen.
