Change Affects Pets

Recently so many changes have happened. And these changes affects pets as well as us.

During the past year, most new family pets were rarely left alone. Now they are being left alone for long periods.

These family pets don’t understand what’s happening. They may be stressed and getting into trouble. Yes, changes affect our pets!

When we first brought Gizmo home, our routine included leaving him alone for short periods of time. We fell off the wagon while Covid kept us home most of the time.

Now we’re leaving the house more often and being social again. It’s time to get back on the wagon and slowly break Gizmo into being alone.

We have our routine.

I get his special bully stick and a treat with Rescue Pet® drops on it.

Then I put them on his favorite rug.

I tell him where I’m going and when I’ll be back.

Finally, I remind him he is safe and walk out the door.

Yes, the music is always on.

Then I leave.

When I come back, I calmly walk in.

What other changes affect pets? It can be small – you walk out of the house to get the mail or BIG – you leave for a long vacation.

If the change is big to us, imagine what it’s like to your cat, dog, horse, etc.

Changes can include:

  • Where did they go? Vacations, camp, school, back to the office, or out to dinner.
  • Schedule changes. Small changes are stuck in traffic. Big changes are shift changes from day to night.
  • Moving to a new home can affect cats, dogs, and horses (new barn or new barn personnel.)
  • Family members at home changed. Kids going away to camp or college, moving home, or parents moving in.
  • Dinner or overnight guests are coming.
  • Sadly, many of us lost loved ones this year. With so many deaths of pets and people this year, our pets don’t understand why someone is gone.

If you’re feeling the stress, your pet is feeling it too.

Need help explaining your life changes to your pet? Animal communication is a wonderful way to help your pet understand any changes.

During a communication, I explain the situation and listen to his concerns and needs. Often the pets ask, “where did they go” or “what happened.”

Remember changes affect pets too.
