With summer comes the heat. We all know that cars get hot quickly and it is often best to leave our dogs at home. We still take them for walks, visits, travel, and play in the sun. Even on a hot day, your dog can show signs of heat or sun stroke. So now you can Learn the Signs of Heat or Sun Stroke in Dogs.
The some signs of heat or sun stroke include:
- Rapid panting
- Bright red tongue
- Dark red gums that turn blue or grey
- Rapid heartbeat
- Lethargy
- Vomiting
- Thick salvia
If your dog shows these signs, they may need immediate veterinary care. When in doubt, go to the veterinarian because the situation can change quickly. On the way to the vet, you can do TTouch® ear slides to calm them and help them from going into shock. Very lightly stroke the ear from the skull to the tip of the ear. Be sure you exhale and are breathing as you do this. For a visual, you can watch the video at the bottom of Animal Bridges home page.
Dogs susceptible to heat or sun stroke are short-nose breeds like pugs and older dogs. Be sure there is good air circulation around a plastic crate. Metal crates provide more air circulation. You can add a battery operated fan on the crate to help with air circulation.
Most importantly, observe your dog for any signs of heat stroke. If you want more information on TTouch® and ear slides, please contact Elaine at Animal Bridges.

“Elaine has been very helpful and supportive since my adoption of a very anxious dog. Her t-touch sessions and ongoing communication has helped us both. She has great suggestions and is very responsive to my frantic calls.” – Lynnea Forness, Minneapolis, MN
