Many people think fireworks are beautiful and fun to watch. A rare dog really enjoys them. Boomer, our previous Wheaten, loved fireworks. He would sit on my lap and watch them. He was calm and not bothered by the noise.
Most dogs are not like Boomer and are fearful of fireworks. The following 13 tips to help dogs during fireworks season will help you and your dog have a more enjoyable July 4th week:
- Be sure your dog is wearing a collar with identification. Also have your dog micro-chipped and registered.
- Be sure your dog is secure in the house and no one leaves the door open.
- Early in the day, take your dog for a long walk. Exercise helps her relax!
- Leave your dog at home when you go to the fireworks or enjoy an evening at home with him.
- Thundershirts help dogs be calmer and work like swaddling a baby. If possible, get your dog used to a Thundershirt during the day before firework season. Available at many pet stores.
- Drown out the noise by closing windows, putting on air conditioner or fan, radio, television, etc.
- Turn on lights to blend in with the flashes of light. Some dogs prefer darkness.
- Let your dog to a place of their choice. She may select a bathroom or under a low table.
- Do not force your dog to do anything.
- Talk normal to your dog in a calm voice. Tell her she is safe.
- Be sure your exhale to relax yourself.
- Do gentle TTouch® ear slides to her ears one at a time. Gently stroke from the base of the ear at the skull to the tip. Exhale to calm both of you.
- Be calm like this is normal every day occurrence.
