Last night Hobbes kept looking out the window for his best friend, John. I explained to Hobbes that John was away on business for a few days. He was asking “Where Are They?”

Hobbes stopped looking out the window and sat with me. Then he slept with me until 6 AM. This was a big shift in his behavior. He usually pouts.

Today a friend said her only child left for college last week. Now her daughter’s cat is very clingy.

Yes, our best friends – cats, dog, rabbits, horses, and any pets are affected by changes.

What changes are you, your family, and your pet facing?

New school schedules and added activities like sports.

A dog/cat’s best friend going to college or moving for a new job.

Work schedule changing.

New member in the family (human or animal).

Illness or death of a family member or friend (human or animal).

House for sale or sold.

Change in employment, moving, finances, etc.

The list goes on…

Everyone including animals is affected by change. Some take it in stride and others have a very low tolerance for change.

Although these changes may not affect you, the changes may be confusing your pet.

I use this technique daily with Hobbes and it really helps. Many clients use it too.

When you are ready to leave for any reason, be very calm and not emotional. Have your jacket on, and stuff ready to pick up as you walk out the door.

Have a treat or special toy ready to give him. If it is really a great treat, he will enjoy it as you slowly leave.

Remember to exhale.

Tell her where you are going and when you will be back. For example, “Hobbes, I am going to a meeting and will be back after dinner.”

Leave the house calmly. If you are excited and stressed, your dog will probably be upset too.

When you return, quietly enter the house. Put your stuff down. After a minute or two of ignoring her, say “Hi, I am home” and give her a low-key greeting. Give her slow, gentle strokes.

Remember leaving and coming home are quiet events.

One client’s dog, Barry White, was frantic and destructive after she left. Read her amazing story about Barry White.

If a family member is going to college, moving out, or going on a trip, please tell your pet why their buddy is leaving. Pets want to know what is going on.

Imagine how you would feel if someone you love just walked out the door and never seemed to come home.

Many pet parents find animal communications help their pets during changes. After an animal communication, a cat traveled comfortably for 5 days by car.

School has started. Schedules change.

What is changing in your life and your pet’s life?

Are your schedules changing from being home during the summer to going back to school?

Is your pet’s best buddy going off to college or moving into an apartment?

Did your work schedule change and you are working different times?

Do you have new activities – sports, meetings, scouts – and won’t be home for your pet?

Other changes include new member of family (human or animal), death in family or a friend (human or animal), change in employment, moving, finances, etc.

Although these changes may not affect you, the changes may be confusing to your pet.

Help your dog, cat, or horse (and rabbit too) with these five easy tips.

When you leave the house (or stable):

Tell her where you are going, when you will be back. For example, “Hobbes, I am going to a meeting and will be back after dinner.”

Leave calmly. If you are excited and stressed, your dog will probably be upset too.

You may want to give him a treat or a special toy to entertain him.

If a family member is going to college, moving out, or going on a trip, please tell your pet why their buddy is leaving. Pets want to know what is going on. Imagine how you would feel if someone you love just walked out the door and never seemed to come home.

The Bach® Flower Essence Walnut helps people and animals with the emotions of change. It is a very gentle homeopath that helps everyone with changes. You can find it a natural food store, Whole Foods, or online. Please ask Elaine if you have any questions.

Clients say animal communications help their pets. One dog’s fear of abandonment was helped. And I made a big mistake a few years ago and upset Hobbes.

When you get home, take 5 minutes to sit quietly with your pet. Exhale slowly. Slowly stroke your pet. Forget about all your “should” and “need to’s.” Now is the time to be with your best friend(s).

Still concerned about your pet? Schedule a Free 15-Minute Phone Consultation with Elaine of Animal Bridges.

I met Martha Hoffman of Robbinsdale, Minnesota at book reading a few months ago. Martha told me about her dog, Barry White, who tore up a crate and other items due to separation anxiety. The simple suggestion I gave her resulted in her dog with separation anxiety helped!

I received this email with Martha’s success story:

Barry White

“Elaine, I am the person you met at the reading in Wayzata for Alan and Linda Anderson’s book [A Dog Named Leaf]. I just had to tell you how your comment that day really helped me with my new rescue dog who had bad separation anxiety. You told me to talk to him and tell him where I was going, what time I would be back and that he is my forever dog and has nothing to worry about.

Within 2 days all his anxiety was gone – no need for a crate, he is a new dog!! The trainer at his obedience class asked me “what happened to him?” – I said “what do you mean?” – she said “He is a different dog, he is in love with you”!!!

I wanted to thank you for this and also comment on the advice in your [Animal Bridges] latest newsletter regarding Change Your Mind. That advice has helped me on all levels with my 2 dogs and 2 cats. I realized how I had a negative mindset toward what I considered their irritating bad habits. It is already going so much better even in one day!! More peace in my home!!

You are so good at what you do Elaine and I just had to thank you!!”

Thanks Martha!

You can easily help them and yourself by taking a few minutes to sit quietly with them and enjoy the moment. Cats and dog love being told how much you love them. Share with them by talking aloud or in your mind how their routines may change. Here are Tips to Reduce Stress for Your Pet During The Holidays:

If someone is coming to visit, explain who is coming, when, and how long they will visit. This is important for a shy dog.

If you are going on a trip, tell your cat and dog why they will see suitcases. Tell them when you are leaving and when you will be back – they understand time. Tell them what they are going to their favorite vacation lodging and will have a great time. Remind them you will be back! This is important for a dog with separation anxiety.

If you are having a party, tell them about the party and who will come. Give them a job – maybe have your dog greet people and your cat stay in her favorite room to rest.

If you have a Christmas tree, please explain to your dog and cat this is a special tree. (Our first male dog was confused about a tree in the house – no damage done.) Their job is to watch the tree and all the lights on the tree. Also you may give them the gifts they can open!

Now sit back and enjoy the holidays. Remember your pet wants to understand why there is so much activity!

Two years ago I wrote about Patch, the Husky/Blue Heeler, who whined all the time. Melissa Madsen, his person, wanted to take him off his medication for dog anxiety. They came to Intro to Tellington TTouch® with Your Dog class in March 2009. On Patch’s information sheet, Melissa said he had dog separation anxiety; fear of loud noises, vet visits, slippery surfaces, and many other objects. She added “We don’t want him back on meds but the excessive whining is hard to deal with. He has a ton of fears and HATES black poodles.”

Melissa gave Patch Rescue Remedy® just to get him to the class. During the class, he wore a TTouch® body warp and Melissa did various TTouches® to him. When they went for lunch, she said he was the quietest he had ever been in a car and kept checking to see he was in the car!

Now fast forward to March 2011. Melissa sent me this update. “Hey, update on Patch. It’s been so long! I had to tell you some things, first in the fall, he got his CGC (Canine Good Citizenship). He was able to be 100% anxiety free when I left him with a stranger. Then, we just went on a long road trip and back and not a sound from him. … Thanks again for all your tips!”

TTouch makes lasting changes to animals and helps them with their fears and anxiety. The previously whining dog is now quiet and calm. Also one of Patch’s best friends is a black poodle!
