In less than a month, Gizmo and two of his best buddies ate something potentially poisonous. My dog, Gizmo, ate chocolate! Fortunately, everyone knew the important phone number – Pet Poison Helpline (PPH) in the United States and Canda.

Grab your phone and enter Pet Poison Helpline +1-855-764-7661 as a contact in your phone. To find it quickly, add your pet’s name to the contact. I also have Gizmo’s name listed on his vet’s phone number and the local animal emergency hospital.

Back to the story of Rossi, Fergus, and Gizmo.

On New Year’s Eve, the 11-month-old Rossi the dog ate chocolate bars that were on a table. His people called PPH and learned how much hydrogen peroxide to put down his throat. In a few minutes, they could count the number of candy bar wrappers and the chocolate pieces.

A few weeks later, Rossie took an eye glass lens cleaner cloth and swallowed it. Quickly, his people gave him the dosage and he threw it up.

A few weeks later, a dog owner friend, whose dog does not go counter surfing, brought double dark chocolate brownies to Fergus’ house. She put them on the kitchen counter and went to talk to someone. When she came back, only one brownie remained on the plate! A dog ate chocolate brownies!

Quickly Fergus’ people called PPH and learned how much hydrogen peroxide to give Fergus. Yes, all the brownies came up.

A few days later, Fergus’ mom told me a very important lesson they learned. Take the dog outside before giving the hydrogen peroxide! Clean up is easier!

It wasn’t days later, we experienced grapes falling from a plate as John got up from the table. John immediately told me with a panicked look. I found the grape stem on the floor and one slightly chewed grape.

I remembered cutting the grapes into small groups and knew it probably had 3-5 grapes on the stem.

Who Did I Call? Pet Poison Helpline!

I grabbed my phone and called the Pet Poison Helpline (PPH). Be sure to have your credit card ready for the $85US per incident fee (covers contact with your vet if needed, additional support for you, and poison research). The veterinary professional asked what was eaten, how many grapes, Gizmo’s weight, health questions, and put me on a quick hold.

She came back with the following instructions:

Number of tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide for 3-5 grapes to give Gizmo.

Wait 10-15 minutes, and give a specific amount of more hydrogen peroxide in case all 8-10 grapes were not thrown up.

Gave me a case number if we needed to call back.

I had the hydrogen peroxide, grabbed the measuring spoons, and realized we didn’t have a turkey baster or something to put in Gizmo’s mouth. John grabbed a clean plastic funnel and put peanut butter on the tip.

We headed outside and gave Gizmo the peroxide with the funnel. He walked a little bit and threw up. Up came one grape and most of his breakfast. Seeing his breakfast, I realized we were done!

Lessons Learned

Have the Pet Poison Helpline (PPH) in your phone! +1-855-764-7661

Have a small, unopen hydrogen peroxide in the dog drawer.

Have a small baster or plastic syringe to use only for the pet in the “pet drawer.”

Take your dog outside! Easier clean up.

Have your dog/cat walk or play to help with the vomiting.

Was everything thrown up?

Call back the PPH if you have questions.

PPH is answered by veterinarian professions. They always impressed me.

Prior to calling PPH, I called the local pet ER and asked if I should come in. They said to call the PPH, because it was cheaper than if they called. Also, we have a 25-minute drive to the local ER.

If veterinary care is needed, PPH works with your vet to develop a specific treatment plan for your pet!

Read this now so you are prepared for an emergency!

PPH works with all pets including cats, dogs, birds, exotics, fish, etc.

Pet Poison Information

PPH created the Top 10 Pet Poisons for Pets in 2022 from all their cases that year:

Chocolate

Gizmo and I want to help all the bored cats and dogs.

Some dogs love the cold and snow. Others would rather stay inside like many of their pet parents. When he needs a little extra treat or is bored, the Bob-A-Lot comes out and he plays. Remember cats can use it too. His recovery reminded me of many tips and resources for your dog and cat.

Surgery Recovery Tips

These tips for your dog will help both of you with the recovery process:

When you pick up your dog after surgery, if possible, have someone sit in the back seat with your dog. This calms you and your dog.

Be sure the cone (the “party hat” instead of “cone of shame”) is attached to her collar to lift the weight of it off her neck.

If appropriate, try the soft collars that inflate.

Gizmo enjoyed eating ice cubes from the floor instead of negotiating the water dish.

If your dog jumps on your bed to sleep, consider putting your mattress on the floor during the no jumping restriction.

Great Way to Feed Your Dog and Cat

Before Gizmo had his surgery, I introduced him to StarMark Bob-A-Lot. I filled it with some kibble and Gizmo learned how to get the food to fall out.

It’s a great way to feed a puppy! It’s mentally stimulating, takes time to eat, and tires a puppy!

The great news is it comes in a smaller size for puppies, small dogs, and cats. Gizmo’s is the large size and used daily.

Your pet will thank you and you’ll enjoy the entertainment. Here’s three cats learning to play with the Bob-A-Lot!

Pet Poison Helpline — Can save your pets life

This is the most important tip and resource for your dog and cat!

Right now, put the Pet Poison Helpline in your phone! 1-855-764-7661 and website. Phones are answered 24 hours 7 days a week. The $65 incident fee per incident includes follow-up consultations.

They help all types of dogs, cats, birds, and other animals in the United States, Canada, and Caribbean!

Last year I came home and found Gizmo chewed several Jade Plant leaves and left them on the rug.

Immediately I called the Helpline, and they gave me the information on what to do. Fortunately, he was okay.

Over the years, several friends’ dogs eat chocolate! They called the Helpline and got specific instructions according to the type of chocolate, amount eaten, and size of dog. They also had follow-up calls. Great news -– the dogs were fine! Pet parents are calmer too!

Please put it in your phone now!

What Dog Food is Best?

Wonder about dog food recalls? (Another important tip and resource for your dog and cat!)

Dog Food Advisor is known for its dog and cat food recalls emails. I recommend you sign up for the recall emails. You receive an email only when there is a food recall.

What you feed your pet is such a personal choice. Dog Food Advisor (link) helps cut through the information with updated dog food reviews. It reviews:

Puppy food: dry, wet, large breed, and small breed.

Dog food: dry, wet, raw, senior, grain free, with grain, sensitive stomach. Also by size – small dog, large breed adult, 12 popular breeds.

Special requirements: budget friendly, allergies, weight loss, organic, and low fat.

I researched and decided what was the best food for Gizmo as a puppy and adult. Now I change his proteins often within the same dog food. An easy way to give him variety.

The new year is approaching fast with the 2019 New Year’s celebrations. Many people think about their New Year’s Resolutions. Have you thought about your pet New Year’s Resolutions?

For 2018 I added Hobbes, my Wheaten, to the mix of resolutions or aspiring new intentions. Do you need ideas for pet New Year’s resolutions?

Here are some quick ideas for you and your pet New Year resolutions:

Sit quietly with your pet (cat, dog, bird, ferret, horse, etc.) and just spend time with him. No phone, tablet, television, or other distractions. Just be together for 5 minutes.

Check your dog and cat’s tags. Is the information up to date? Did you disconnect the landline and only have a cell phone? Is the collar in great condition? Order tags if needed.

Initiate play with your pet. He may be surprised!

With cold or hot weather, pets get as bored as we are in the house. Read some great ideas to bring joy into everyone’s life.

Does your dog need cold weather gear? After trying several types of dog booties, Hobbes likes PAWZ Dog Boots. He lifts each paw as I put on the boot. The thin, rubber boots are great for older dogs who slip on the floor.

Do you know exactly what your pet eats? Do you recognize all the ingredients? Ask your local, knowledgeable pet food store for ideas. Do what is best for you and your pet.

Go for a walk or add 5 minutes to your usual walk with your dog. Some cats enjoy walking with harness and leash too.

Most importantly, enjoy your pet with these pet New Year’s resolutions.

Ever wonder what your pet is thinking, or why she’s doing certain things? He may have ideas for his pet new year’s resolutions! Animal Communication will tell you – in your pet’s own words! Get a transcript of a conversation with your pet! Purchase an Animal Communication today!

Many of the activities are based on items from around your house. For fun there are some tips for you too. Have fun!

The indoor activities for dogs are:

Put some old toys away and bring out toys she hasn’t seen in a while.

Put a plastic bottle in a sock and throw it across the room. Great for those who love crinkly sounds.

Hide treats around the house. Then have him hunt and eat..

Teach a new trick or fine tune an old trick. Does she do something cute? Make it a trick.

Practice the basic commands of sit, down, off, touch, come, and stay with wonderful treats. Make it fun.

For more ideas, check out Beat the Cold with Indoor Dog Activities from the StarTribune. Have fun!

Cats have it easy – they don’t know it is really cold out unless they are sitting on the window sills. Here are a few tips for cats:

My favorite game for cats is to clear off all the surfaces in the bathroom. Put a ping pong ball and cat in the bathtub. Let the fun begin!

Make simple toys out of toilet paper rolls with these easy directions.

For people, here are some suggestions:

Call a friend who you keep thinking about. She will love hearing from you even if it is over a year!

Find the book you wanted to read, and give yourself a book holiday.

If you love puzzles pull out a jigsaw puzzle. If you get stuck, I may be over to help. I become addicted very quickly.

Remember the craft you didn’t finish. It is a perfect time to work on it.

Enjoy the time with your pets. They love when you sit with them and quietly stroke them.

These tips can get you through the cold, snowy winter days or the heat of summer.

Cat issues with litter box? Is your cat being creative where she is going? Is he spraying on furniture and the walls? You are not alone!

The biggest issue for cat pet parents is litter boxes and a cat not using it. Suddenly your cat is spraying outside the box or not even getting close. What do you do?

One of Animal Bridges’ clients had this issue. The cat was no longer using the litter box. She didn’t know what to do. When she called, we went through the “Cat Litter Box Check List.”

Cat Litter Box Check List

Clean the litter box daily. TIP: Keep scooper next to box and use often. Why? Cats are really picky and won’t go in a dirty litter box.

Has the type of litter changed recently? Cats don’t care if the litter is on sale or scented. TIP: If it works, keep it. Why: Cats don’t like change.

Is the litter box in a quiet, private area? TIP: If the box is in the basement or utility room, have it in a quiet area – not next to the furnace or water heater. Why: Cats don’t like scary sounds

Location, location, location. Does your cat live in a multi-level home? TIP: Put a litter box on each level. Why: Who wants to go up or downstairs when the urge calls?

Important Cat Math for pet parents to learn. TIP: Number of cats + 1 = number of litter boxes in house. Why: Cats love privacy. Don’t you?

Does the cat have a medical issue? Please take the cat to the veterinarian to be sure there is no medical problems. TIP: If not medical problem, it’s a behavior issue.

Here is what we discovered as we talked.

The litter box was usually cleaned daily except one weekend when they were out of town. Hmmm – the cat was sending a message.

Someone in the family wanted to save money and the litter was changed to a cheaper brand. Opps!

The litter box was in the basement by the furnace. They moved into the new house during the summer and the cat was happy with the box. Then the outside temperatures dropped and the cat was afraid of this “monster in the corner” (the furnace) making noises.

The new house had many floors and only one litter box in the basement. Hmmmm.

The pet parent hadn’t studied Cat Math. Cat Math says 1 cat + 1 = 2 litter boxes. The cat wanted to have options.

The veterinarian said, “She is healthy. It is a behavior issue.”

After fixing all the problems, the cat issues with litter box was gone. The cat was using the litter box again!

Do you have a cat with not using the litter box? Sign up for a free 15-minute phone or Skype consultation.

When I meet people they tell me about their pets. Was your pet rescued? What is your pet’s story? Everyone has a story to tell and I love learning about each individual animal companion.

Often I hear:

She was a pet rescued from a puppy mill and had a horrible life (lots of details).

He was abused dog.

She was a feral cat and all beat up.

Usually I hear more about the pet‘s life before her wonderful forever home.

Recently I remembered how I would introduce Hobbes or tell his story. I would start out “He was returned to the breeder because …” and share his personal story. I often followed with “His name was Max and he didn’t like it. So I changed it to Hobbes.”

A month after I adopted Hobbes, we were exploring the neighborhood. I had just shared his story about his previous life and name. He yelled “Stop! I don’t want to continue reliving this. I live with you and this is my story!”

Hobbes taught me a life lesson I will never forget.

Animals live in the present moment — The Now. Most of the time when asked about their previous families or relationships, they will give a very vague answer.

“They were poor.”

“It was a tough life.”

“I was abandoned.”

When I ask for more information, they give it quickly and change the subject.

Was our “pet rescued” or did they “rescue us?”

They don’t care about the past. They live for the moment. They are wonderful teachers for us to forgive and move on with our lives.

They want us to put down our phones and other distractions, and spend time with them. They give us unconditional love and are always present with us.

I don’t know any animal who thinks about:

The “jerk” who cut me off in traffic.

My long To Do list — will the world end today if I don’t get it done?

Or all the “human” worries.

We can learn so much from our pets.

What do you think of changing the story to “Rover adopted me and changed my life. We have a wonderful life. Rover is so smart and teaches me to be happy and joyful.”

Comment below how you are changing your pet’s story. Animal Bridges can help you with a new story.

Wet a bandana and put it around your dog’s neck or your neck. Better yet, put the rolled, wet bandana in the freezer before wearing.

Wet a t-shirt and put it on your dog. Tie up the excess t-shirt on her back.

If your dog is wearing a ThunderShirt (a great calming garment for dogs) and not in air conditioning or a cool place, be sure to wet down the Thundershirt.

If you are in a place without air conditioning, try to use a wire crate instead of plastic crate. Wire crates allow more air circulation. Also place a fan near the crate. If the animal is still hot, place a wet sheet or towel over part of the crate with the fan blowing on it.

Be sure your cat has cool places to escape the heat.

Dogs with short hair or hairless breeds can get sunburned. Also cats with white ears or faces can get sun burned. Pet sunscreen is available at many pet supply stores.

Always have water available for your pets. Some dogs really enjoy a wading pool to keep cool.

With the heat of summer, thunderstorms can pop up at any time.

Does your pet become anxious with thunderstorms?

Does your pet have pain or act scared sometimes?

Ever wish you could tell her something she would understand?

Wish you knew what he was thinking?
